Kodiak Island Kayaking and Pack Rafting

Brand New!

Packing Rafting

New to Zachar Bay Lodge are the pack rafts. True to name they can be packed upriver for a float down or charter a plane* to have you dropped into a high lake for a longer float.

Once at the river, an electric pump quickly inflates your raft. After packing your supplies onto the inflated raft and donning your safety gear, you launch and let the river take you. The shores around you rarely see people allowing you to view nature at its purest. You may catch glimpses of the Kodiak brown bear, black-tailed deer or fox. Depending on the season, you will see salmon fighting to make it upsteam or dolly varden hiding in the shadows. As the river nears the bay, you will see eagles, gulls and other sea birds.

Kayaking

Whether staying in Zachar Bay and paddling from the lodge or loading the kayaks into the boat to take to a neighboring bay, floating on the waters around the island provides you with unforgettable experiences. Some might include seeing eagles in their nests, paddling next to birds’ nesting islands, watching a school of fish swim under the kayak, having curious harbor seals pop up around you or floating in shallows and looking at the ocean floor.

Lunch can be packed for a shore lunch and a bit of beach combing. Look for pumice or other rocks, find starfish or mermaid purses (the leathery pouch that holds a developing shark or skate embryo), or simply sit and listen to the waves lapping the shore while you take in the view.

Zachar Bay Lodge has three single kayaks and one double kayak.
