Frazer River Flyout for Red Salmon
July 1 – July 25 Red Salmon flyout to Frazer
*Additional Cost for Plane
A 15 minute float plane trip from the lodge, Frazer Lake, the second largest lake on the island, has a red salmon run due to the efforts of Kodiak Fish and Game. The red salmon travel up the Dog Salmon River pooling below the falls before continuing the journey up the man-made fish ladder to Frazer Lake in order to lay their eggs. It is a favorite place for fisherman because the reds rest in pools before mustering the courage to head up the ladder.
You will walk 3/4 of a mile on a wide trail from the lake to the bear viewing area before veering off onto the narrow Angler’s Trail through the tall grass. A short hike ends further down the river where red salmon congregate. The wide open space and beauty of the area makes fishing for the schools of reds unforgettable. We are one of two lodges permitted to fish this area (we are limited to five fishermen a day). With these limitations, you will never have to worry about large crowds.
Red salmon can be very hard to catch as they are focused on getting to their nesting grounds. They like small flies and are very acrobatic while reeling in, flipping and jumping in the air. Your guide will have the knowledge and expertise to get you hooked up. While you fish, the guide is watching for passing bears and using his training to keep you safe.
